A Key Piece of Financial Advice for Superyacht Crew
Here’s a stupid question: Who wants to be a millionaire?
(As long as the currency is a sensible one, of course.)
Let’s face it, the only people who don’t want to be a millionaire are multi-millionaires and billionaires.
So it’s a stupid question.
Besides, most superyacht crew say they want to be a millionaire, but despite having the opportunity to become one, they don’t do anything about it. In other words, they don’t want to become a millionaire after all. Not really.
Yes, that’s a harsh assessment, because we are talking about good, hard-working people. It’s also harsh because becoming a millionaire isn’t easy. It’s a bit of a slog, to be honest. It’s not surprising only a few superyacht crew ever get there.
But what if we asked you this question:
Who wants to LIVE like a millionaire?
You’d probably say, “What’s the difference?”
We’d reply, “It’s a lot easier to achieve, because you don’t actually need a million dollars or euros or pounds. All you need is to understand the most valuable thing millionaires (and billionaires) have.”
It’s something you can have too.
Read on if you’d like to know what it is and how to get it. (Nope, it’s not vast amounts of money.)
What living like a millionaire really means
Here are two lists. The millionaire’s life and yours.

Financial freedom for superyacht crew isn’t just about money
Reading these lists, you’ll have spotted two things.
- No mention of spending lots of money.
- Plenty of mention of independent choice (the millionaire) or lack of it (you).
You see, you don’t need millions of dollars to live like a millionaire. What you need is independence.
Sure, if you want a big house, an expensive car, designer clothes and all the trappings of wealth, you’re going to need money, and plenty of it.
But you don’t need millions to live an independent, meaningful life, doing things that fulfil you. You can do that on much less. But only if you understand one thing first.
Money is a really bad measure of wealth.
A much better measure of wealth is your ability to control how you spend your time.
Time is more valuable than money.
Don’t believe us?
OK. Here’s a test.
Would you prefer:
OPTION A: $100 million into your bank account today, but you only get to live another 5 years.
OPTION B: $500,000 into your bank account in 5 years’ time, and you get to live until you are 90 years old, in good physical and mental health.
We’re guessing you went with OPTION B. Because for you, time (life) really is more valuable than money.
And $500,000 is a pretty good starting point to live like a millionaire. Besides, you can always make more money, but you can’t make more time.
IMPORTANT: You can make $500,000 actually happen during your yachting career. Or even $1,000,000 or more.
That means having the foundation to live like a millionaire is genuinely within your reach. (And maybe so is being an actual millionaire.)
Many, many millionaires
According to UBS’s 2024 Global Wealth Report, there are 58 million dollar millionaires in the world. And there are 2,664 billionaires, 14 of whom have wealth totalling $100 billion or more. You call these people ‘the yacht owner’ and you’re expending your life force in service of their luxury breaks.
